Work on SM Naga set to start
IF PLANS push through, excavation work for the planned SM Naga City mall will begin by mid-November, high ranking officials of the company bared in a presentation before the Sangguniang Panlungsod last October 22.
Also in attendance were ranking members of the Metro Naga Chamber of Commerce and Industry, as well as department heads of the city government.
Annie S. Garcia, vice president for operations of the SM Group, said they are aiming for a March 2009 opening. Joining her were Engr. Antolin Paule, senior vice president for engineering; Glen Ang, assistance vice president; Ronald Tumao, vice president of the business development group; and other ranking officials of the construction group.
Paule and Ang previously represented SM in a meeting we arranged last month with the chamber and property owners at the Central Business District 2. At the time, they said they are already in the process of securing the needed permits from national government agencies.
Work, originally planned to commence early next year, was advanced after the company was able to secure the necessary environmental compliance certificate (ECC) for the mall development project, a copy of which they showed to us.
The two-storey mall will rise on a 4.7-hectare property between the existing Filcab terminal and St. Joseph School. It will have a gross floor area of 73,300 sq. meters, 54,400 of which are leasable.
Together with a department store that will occupy almost 12,000 sq. m and a supermarket (6,300 sq. m), the mall will feature four cinemas, a food court and 759 parking slots. It will also accommodate as many as 170 short and long-term tenants.
The project was delayed after the SM Group decided to put up a full-scale mall, instead of the original hypermart-type development.
By the way, the company is already hiring key management position for SM Naga City, which you can access here.

Willy,
Would there be moviehouses in this SM Naga MegaMall ? if there is, it would be the death-knell for the Bichara-chain movie houses. What do you think ?
Porfirio Rubirosa
the design appears to be some sort of mini-mall of asia.
argh, no job in IT?
PR, there will be four cinemas in this mall. but there is a policy that R-18 movies will not be shown in any SM cinemas. i guess bichara could fill in the gap.
(sorry, i don't mean to be nasty, but happy cinema pops up into my head. remember that movie house? hehe...)
Dave,
Ano , IT specialist ka diyan ? siguro a small digital theater, showing artsy-fartsy movies would have a market there ? what do you think ? you know, Fellini, Kurosawa, Godard, Brocka, Kubrick, etc. that sort of thing ?
PR
Ya I think Bichara can reposition itself and look for a good niche, like, what you said, art films and even independent films.
As much as I'd like to believe there already is, I am not sure if there is a market for these in Naga/Bicol. Studies can be done though. Even if studies, whether formal or informal, find out that there is none, they can still venture into these and create the market and the demand - although such is not that easy and that cheap to accomplish. A thorough strategic planning should be done.
But to do that is not impossible, in my humble opinion. Not to patronize, but I believe Avenue Square has done that already. At the onset of its operation, a lot of people were saying that such a place/concept (lifestyle center) and positioning (posh, high-end, and upscale) could not possibly click in Naga. But with such unyielding commitment to the chosen positioning, penchant for world-class and best practices, and sound investment in marketing, it was able to somehow "changed the landscape and stirred new trends in commercial development" in Naga, as what Philippine Daily Inquirer recently observed. Haciendas de Naga is another innovative concept that took off albeit the odds.
Or they might all together convert their movie houses to the arcade-type stores that they have already done with the other parts of their theaters.
Just wondering, will SM bring with it the other major bookstores aside from the National Bookstore? 'Think it is about time for Naga City to have Fullybooked, or Power Books also, is it not?
Also, so two-storey only? Hence, it's really relatively small compared to other provincial SMs...

Ducky,
Actually, creating a market for artsy-fartsy movies could be done, it's not impossible, and so with Blues and Jazz music. You begin with the universities and colleges, with their liberal arts/humanities subjects. Bring a new dimension to it, with cinema appreciation seminars/symposia, etc. Bring sikat na directors to naga to discuss movies as art. Create a spin that going to artsy-fartsy movies is cool, and you know how young people react on being perceived to be cool. Same with Jazz and Blues. Create a cool image for these kind of sounds and everything will follow.
And so with the the other creative
arts....
Porfirio Rubirosa
Yup sa IT po ako.
As for the art films, maybe the pirates, with their comprehensive collection of dibidi, have already captured the market. I think Bichara's decline started because of them, and even SM will have a hard time competing against them.
Dave,
Actually, iba man syempre an theater going, kesa seeing dibidi in your home. Those guys who would like to treat their girlfriends, syempre mas gusto nila an sine.
As for the artsy-fartsy movies, no the piratas are entirely clueless about them. What they know are the hottest pornos, martial arts, Korean telenovelas but a Fellini or Kurosawa, they are entirely alien to them, altho they are selling these goods. Example: I bought a box set of a Claude Chabrol movies for a song. There were about 10 discs but the sales clerk in Quiapo, gave it away cheaply because nobody even looks at them. I missed the Stanley Kubrick box-set tho...
Kumusta na an Digital Animation Course sa Ateneo ? is it packing em? dakol an enrolees ?
PR
That's the thing, PR. The pirates most probably have those rare copies, and they sell them dirt cheap!
Sorry, I don't have news about the animation course in ADNU. Though I think it has a healthy level of enrollment since, aside from the cool factor and the award-winning reputation it has developed, there could be job opportunities in Manila and abroad.
Dave,
Ateneo has steep competition with St. Benilde ( La Salle)in the digital animation field.
So what other business ventures are you considering ? let's hear them out....
I've seen some samples from CSB and technically they are good. But of course, ADNU just started out this decade, but has been winning in national contests. Thing is, animation still has a story to tell, and in terms of substance, I give ADNU the edge (it's my probinsyano bias--Bicol has a strong culture).
As for business ventures, perhaps I'll eventually post the details of my ideas in my blog. Abangan :)
why is it only two-storeys?
Why two storeys only ? why indeed ?but the question should be addressed to Henry Sy's think-tank boys. Apparently, they think Naga City is a small market, and cannot sustain if they build a large one.But I think these guys are misinformed. They don't know that Naga City is the crossroads of Bicolandia, and whether you like it or not, you have to pass the City. True, Legaspi has its Pacific Mall ( Gaisano) but that is a different market profile.
Porfirio Rubirosa
Having a 2-storey SM mall does not mean its already small. Look at SM Mall of Asia, the mall has only 2 floors but it the size was compensated by the floor area. I believe that instead of placing a 4 storey mall, SM would be placing a wide mall. 73,000 square meters of floor area is already big. I just read that the original plan was only 40,000 square meters. The new plan almost doubled the size of the floor area. SM Naga indeed will look like a smaller version of SM Mall of Asia with only two storeys.
Well, I stand corrected. And, no-arin daa an inauguration/ribbon cutting ni Mr. Sy kan saiyang SM NAGA MALL ?
Porfirio Rubirosa
how many floors there in sm naga
how many 2or4 floors
i was hoping for an advertising job or a position on the IT staff on SM naga.... puro managerial dammit....
how i wish they can accomodate food service staff in their mall...cause a lot of graduate there are looking for a job that will fit there courses....haaist........hmpf!
